Preview Roundups
March 16, 2014
Philadelphia at Pittsburgh 12:30 PM ET
The Pittsburgh Penguins weren't willing to point the finger toward their litany of injuries as a reason for their lackluster performance in the opener of a home-and-home set with the Philadelphia Flyers. "It's something we've been dealing with all year, and we've found a way," captain Sidney Crosby said after the Penguins' 4-0 loss in Philadelphia. "Now isn't the time to make excuses." The teams will travel west across the Keystone State when they reconvene in Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon.
Vancouver at Florida 3:00 PM ET
Roberto Luongo fully expected to be spearheading the Vancouver Canucks' playoff drive this month. Instead, the veteran goaltender will attempt to derail his former teammates when the Florida Panthers host Vancouver on Sunday afternoon. The matchup comes 12 days after the stunning trade in which Luongo was shipped to Florida after spending eight seasons with the Canucks.
Toronto at Washington 3:00 PM ET
Time is running out for the Washington Capitals to put together a big run as they prepare to host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday before embarking on a rough West Coast trip. The Capitals have played more games than most of the teams ahead of them in the Eastern Conference playoff race and will face Los Angeles (twice), Anaheim, San Jose and Boston in the five after Sunday. Toronto has won four of its last five to climb into second place in the Atlantic Division.
Edmonton at Carolina 3:00 PM ET
The Carolina Hurricanes have dropped to the NHL's version of .500 - and that usually translates to spectator status once the playoffs roll around. The Hurricanes look to reverse a slide that includes eight defeats in their last 11 games when they play host to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday afternoon. A 5-1 defeat at Boston on Saturday dropped Carolina into seventh place in the Metropolitan Division and eight points behind Philadelphia for the final playoff slot in the Eastern Conference.
San Jose at NY Rangers 4:00 PM ET
Henrik Lundqvist will have a tall task ahead if he wishes to become the New York Rangers' winningest goaltender in franchise history on Sunday. Lundqvist looks to accomplish the feat when the red-hot San Jose Sharks pay a visit to Madison Square Garden. After tying Ed Giacomin with his 49th career shutout against Detroit last Sunday, the Swedish Olympian secured his 301st victory to pull even with Mike Richter in New York's 4-2 road triumph over Winnipeg on Friday.
Colorado at Ottawa 5:00 PM ET
The Colorado Avalanche kick off a three-game Canadian road trip on Sunday with a visit to the Ottawa Senators. The Avalanche have enjoyed facing Eastern Conference teams this season, posting an 18-7-1 record. Colorado, which resides in second place in the Central Division, also has one of the league’s best road records at 20-9-2.
Montreal at Buffalo 7:00 PM ET
The Montreal Canadiens were careening toward a fourth consecutive loss before a late uprising changed their fortunes. The Canadiens look to continue that momentum on Sunday night when they visit the reeling Buffalo Sabres. Defenseman Francis Bouillon scored 1:26 into overtime after David Desharnais tied it with three-tenths of a second left in regulation to cap a stunning comeback as Montreal posted a 5-4 victory over Ottawa on Saturday.
Detroit at Chicago 7:30 PM ET
The Chicago Blackhawks renew their rivalry with the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. The Original Six rivals are only facing on only two occasions this season because of Detroit’s move to the Eastern Conference. The Red Wings won the first game, posting a 5-4 home victory in a shootout on Jan. 22.
Dallas at Winnipeg 8:00 PM ET
The Dallas Stars look to strengthen their tenuous hold on the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference when they visit the reeling Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. Dallas, which is tied with Phoenix for eighth place despite playing two fewer games, allowed a two-goal lead in the third-period to evaporate en route to a 4-3 home shootout loss to Calgary on Friday. "This time of year with these points being so valuable, you can't give up a 3-1 lead in the third," captain Jamie Benn said.
