Preview Roundups
March 01, 2014
Washington at Boston 1:00 PM ET
Alex Ovechkin had a dismal performance with Team Russia at the Olympics but he needed only one game back with the Washington Capitals to rediscover his scoring touch. The captain scored the game-winning goal late in the third period of Thursday's victory for the Capitals, who will be seeking their fourth consecutive win when they visit the Boston Bruins on Saturday afternoon.
New Jersey at NY Islanders 1:00 PM ET
Jaromir Jagr looks to become the seventh NHL player to record his 700th goal when he leads the New Jersey Devils against the host New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon. The 42-year-old inched within one of the milestone by scoring his team-leading 18th tally and 32nd point in Thursday's 5-2 triumph over Columbus.
NY Rangers at Philadelphia 1:00 PM ET
After guiding Team Sweden to a silver medal at the Winter Olympics, Henrik Lundqvist looks to continue his positive momentum on Saturday afternoon, when he leads the visiting New York Rangers against the Metropolitan Division-rival Philadelphia Flyers. Lundqvist watched as backup Cam Talbot turned aside 31 shots and came within 12 seconds of his third shutout on Thursday in New York's 2-1 victory over reigning Stanley Cup-champion Chicago.
Florida at Columbus 2:00 PM ET
A pair of teams riding three-game losing streaks will square off when the Columbus Blue Jackets host the Florida Panthers on Saturday afternoon. The stakes are higher for Columbus, which is contending for a playoff slot for only the second time in franchise history, sitting three points behind third-place Philadelphia in the Metropolitan Division. The Blue Jackets could not ask for a better opponent, having won six straight against the Panthers, including a 4-1 victory on Feb. 1.
Winnipeg at Nashville 3:00 PM ET
The Nashville Predators are mired in last place in the Central Division and need to start making up ground on the teams above them to have a hope of reaching the postseason. The Predators have a chance of catching one division opponent immediately in front of them when they host the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday afternoon. Nashville opened the post-Olympic break portion of its schedule in dramatic fashion, erasing a two-goal deficit to top Tampa Bay 3-2 and snap a three-game skid.
Tampa Bay at Dallas 3:00 PM ET
The Dallas Stars put themselves right in the middle of the Western Conference wild-card race with strong defense as they prepare to host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. The Stars won four of their last five games - allowing only five goals in the process - to take over a playoff position. The Lightning, who are 2-5-0 in their last seven after a 3-2 loss at Nashville on Thursday, could get a boost if second-leading scorer Valtteri Filppula returns from an ankle injury.
Carolina at Los Angeles 4:00 PM ET
The Carolina Hurricanes begin the California portion of their five-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, when they visit the Los Angeles Kings. After extending their losing streak to three contests with setbacks against Buffalo and Dallas, Carolina plays three straight Golden State representatives during a four-day stretch. The Hurricanes' task certainly won't be easy as Jonathan Quick returned from the Winter Olympics to turn aside all 25 shots he faced in Los Angeles' 2-0 triumph over Calgary
Toronto at Montreal 7:00 PM ET
The Toronto Maple Leafs attempt to extend their point streak to four games when they visit the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. Toronto won its last two contests before the Olympic break but let a late lead slip away against the New York Islanders on Thursday and dropped a 5-4 decision in overtime. Phil Kessel recorded a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have earned at least one point in 13 of their last 15 contests (11-2-2).
Pittsburgh at Chicago 8:00 PM ET
Two of the league's top teams clash outdoors on Saturday night as the Chicago Blackhawks host the Pittsburgh Penguins at Soldier Field in the final installment of the 2014 NHL Stadium Series. Chicago, which is among three teams that sit five points behind Anaheim in the race for the Presidents' Trophy, is coming off a 3-2-2 road trip during which it dropped the final two games.
Calgary at Edmonton 10:00 PM ET
The Calgary Flames attempt to even the season series at two wins apiece when they visit the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday for the fourth installment of the Battle of Alberta. The road team has won each of the first three contests, with Calgary posting a 2-1 overtime victory at Edmonton on Dec. 7. The Oilers recorded a 4-2 win at Calgary on Nov. 16 and blanked the Flames 2-0 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Dec. 27.
