Jonathan Marchessault scored a hat trick and the Vegas Golden Knights extended their season-opening point streak to 11 games with a 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night in Las Vegas.

It was the fourth hat trick of Marchessault's career and first since December 2019. William Karlsson and Ivan Barbashev each had a goal and an assist and Alex Pietrangelo added two assists for Vegas, which improved to a league-best 10-0-1.

Logan Thompson made 29 saves for the Golden Knights to improve to 5-0-0 on the season. He also had an assist, the first point of his NHL career.

Kyle Connor and Alex Iafallo each had a goal and an assist for Winnipeg, which had a five-game point streak (3-0-2) snapped. Connor Hellebuyck finished with 21 saves.

Vegas took a 1-0 lead at the 10:45 mark of the first period on Karlsson's fourth goal of the season. Karlsson broke down the left wing on a rush and took a pass from Pavel Dorofeyev at the edge of the left circle, where he roofed a wrist shot to extend his point streak to eight games, the longest of his career.

The Jets tied it at 1-1 early in the second period when Connor took a pass from Iafallo along the left boards and then cut across the slot, where he backhanded a shot into the top left corner for his sixth goal of the season.

Just 13 seconds after Connor's tying goal, Winnipeg's Mason Appleton was assessed a double-minor for drawing blood on a high-sticking penalty on Alec Martinez and the Golden Knights took advantage by scoring two power-play goals in a 98-second span.

Marchessault got the first with a wrist shot on Hellebuyck's glove side. The score was set up by Thompson, who took advantage of open ice during a Jets line change to fire a pass from his own goal line about 130 feet to Mark Stone, who was alone near the Winnipeg blue line. Stone then hit Marchessault cutting down the slot, where he fired a wrist shot glove side.

Barbashev then made it 3-1 when he put a rebound of Pietrangelo's shot into a wide-open net.

Winnipeg cut it to 3-2 at the 1:49 mark of the third with a power-play goal by Iafallo. Connor fired a wrist shot from the right point that was deflected by Cole Perfetti and then hit Iafallo stationed by the left post before going into the net.

Marchessault answered at the 6:47 mark, picking up a loose puck in the low slot and firing a wrist shot past Hellebuyck's glove side. Marchessault completed his hat trick with an empty-netter with 2:52 to go -- his sixth goal of the season.
