Penguins 3, Islanders 1: Patric Hornqvist scored a pair of goals and set up another as host Pittsburgh ended New York's perfect start to the season.
Evgeni Malkin scored a power-play goal and set up another by Hornqvist 55 seconds apart in the second period as the Penguins rebounded from their first loss to beat the Islanders for the 22nd time in 27 home games. Captain Sidney Crosby collected two assists, including the 500th of his career, and Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 34 shots to improve to 20-7-3 lifetime against the Islanders.
Defenseman Thomas Hickey scored the lone goal for New York, which was denied in its bid for the first 5-0-0 start in franchise history. Jaroslav Halak made 35 saves in the loss.
The Islanders dominated the early going and scored the lone goal of the opening session when Ryan Strome sent a cross-ice pass to Hickey, who rifled a shot over the left shoulder of Fleury. New York had a 5-on-3 for 1:26 in the middle session but failed to capitalize, and Pittsburgh came storming back.
Malkin tied it 15 seconds into a two-man advantage, lining up a shot from the inner edge of the left faceoff circle and beating Halak short side before putting the Penguins ahead with a slap shot from the right point that Hornqvist tipped home. The Islanders came into the game with the league's second-ranked power play but failed on all seven chances.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Crosby extended his season-opening point streak to four games. ... Islanders captain John Tavares was held off the scoresheet, halting his franchise-record streak of four multi-point performances to open the season. ... Penguins C Pascal Dupuis, who was stretchered off the ice after taking a shot in the back of the neck in Thursday's loss to Dallas, returned to the lineup and blocked one shot while registering another in 15:54 of ice time.
