Jack Campbell made 40 saves, and Adrian Kempe and Michael Amadio scored first-period goals as the Los Angeles Kings spoiled the Montreal Canadiens' home opener with a 3-0 victory on Thursday night.

Jeff Carter added a goal and two assists, putting the game away with a third-period score as the Kings improved to 1-1-0 on their early-season, four-game trip through Canada. It was the second consecutive season the Kings shut out the Canadiens in Montreal.

Campbell recorded his first career shutout in his eighth career start, taking over in net for the third consecutive game after veteran goalie Jonathan Quick sustained a lower-body injury in practice Saturday.

Campbell appeared to lose his shutout with 9:01 remaining in the game when the puck trickled into the Kings' goal. Referees initially waved off the goal, but overturned the call on replay ruling that the goal happened in "one continuous motion."

The Kings countered with a coach's replay, and Montreal's Andrew Shaw was ruled to have interfered with Campbell on the play.

The Kings took an early lead when Kempe scored 3:56 into the game. Kempe took the puck at center ice, moved inside the blue line and beat goalie Carey Price (26 saves) over his right shoulder to the short side of the goal.

Kempe's first goal of the season ended a 32-game drought without a goal that went back to February. It was his 19th career goal, with five of those coming in three career games against Montreal.

Amadio also scored his first goal of the season at 11:31 of the opening period. Carter and rookie Jaret Anderson-Dolan assisted on the play. It was the first career point for Anderson-Dolan, who was playing in his second career game.

After assists on the first two goals, Carter scored one of his own at the 9:04 mark of the third period. It was also his first of the season.

The Canadiens were celebrating the 25th anniversary of their last Stanley Cup title, which was also the last time a team from Canada was NHL champion. Montreal defeated the Kings in that 1993 Stanley Cup Final.
