CHICAGO -- The Ottawa Senators hadn't won in Chicago in 15 years -- a run they knew wouldn't end without a proper start.

But it's the way the Senators finished Tuesday night against the Blackhawks that made the difference in a gritty 4-3 victory at United Center.

The Senators scored three times in the second period, including Dion Phaneuf's game-winner, and also got 23 saves from Mike Condon, including one on a penalty shot by Marcus Kruger with 4:52 remaining.

The save preserved a one-goal lead for Ottawa (19-11-3), which won its third straight game while the Blackhawks saw their five-game winning streak end.

"We had to battle for it," defenseman Erik Karlsson said.

Ottawa held on after the Blackhawks (22-9-4) closed the deficit to 4-3 early in the third period on Richard Panik's goal. Playing with an extra attacker on a delayed penalty, Panik took a pass from Patrick Kane and finished off the scoring chance.

Once the Blackhawks got to within a goal, Condon finished off the win with several big saves, including the one on Kruger's penalty-shot chance.

"I think Mike is like everybody now," Senators coach Guy Boucher said. "What you see is a definite commitment to battling, paying the price and doing the extra work and being on the same page."

Bobby Ryan gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead in the first period after the Blackhawks failed to clear the defensive zone and Kyle Turris fired a shot that was blocked to Ryan, who tallied his fifth goal in the last five games.

Artemi Panarin's power-play goal at the 11:17 mark of the first period tied the game. Panarin took a pass from Brent Seabrook and rifled a shot past Condon.

The Senators grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second period, scoring twice in 10 seconds. Derick Brassard beat Scott Darling, and Tom Pyatt followed up with another tally, which extended the Senators' lead to two goals.

Chicago, which played without Artem Anisimov and lost Marian Hossa to an upper-body injury in the first period, drew to within 3-2 at the 12-minute mark of the second period when Tyler Motte fielded a Vinnie Hinostroza pass that deflected off defenseman Cody Ceci and onto Motte's stick. Ottawa challenged the goal, contending Motte was offsides, but officials determined the video review was inconclusive.

But Ottawa pushed its lead to 4-2. Phaneuf was credited with the goal after he was hit by Turris' shot from just inside the blue line.

The goal proved to be too much for the Blackhawks, who couldn't capitalize on late chances.

"It's frustrating when pucks don't go in, especially when it can be the difference-maker in the game," Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said. "You give yourself a chance to tie things up late in the game. Obviously, we didn't want to get behind, but we did."

Ottawa's early start and Condon's steady play in net all led to a victory against a Blackhawks team that Karlsson and his teammates consider a measuring stick. Ending the 15-year winless streak in Chicago just proved to be icing on top what was already a daunting challenge against the NHL's top team.

"We did a good enough job to win the game tonight even though we slowed down a little bit, especially in the third," Karlsson said. "We gave them a little bit too much and they had their scoring chances to come back in the game, but Condon played solid for us and somehow we squeaked through. It was just a battling game for us."

NOTES: The Senators recalled G Matt O'Connor from Binghamton of the AHL as an emergency backup for Mike Condon after Andrew Hammond sustained an ankle injury Sunday against the New York Islanders. Coach Guy Boucher said at Tuesday's morning skate that Hammond should be fine in a few days. ... Ottawa LW Mike Hoffman returned after serving a two-game suspension for a cross-check on San Jose's Logan Couture. ... The Senators scratched D Fredrik Claesson and G Craig Anderson. ... Blackhawks C Artem Anisimov missed his second straight game due to an upper-body injury. Anisimov, who ranks third on the team with 27 points, did not skate Tuesday morning and is listed as day-to-day. ... Chicago activated G Corey Crawford from injured reserve and reassigned G Lars Johansson to the American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs. Crawford skated for the fifth straight day Tuesday as he continues to recover from an appendectomy. Crawford, who has missed 10 games, expects to return Friday against Colorado. ... D Michal Rozsival and D Michal Kempny were Chicago's healthy scratches.
