DETROIT -- As far as the Detroit Red Wings saw it, their dreams of continuing their winning ways were literally shattered.

Seth Jones took a drop pass from Brandon Dubinsky and wired a high slapshot past Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek 3:22 into overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 3-2 victory over the Wings Tuesday.

Just moments earlier at the other end of the ice, Dubinsky slashed the stick of Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg as he was taking the puck toward the Blue Jackets net and Zetterberg's stick broke.

The loss put a halt to Detroit's two-game winning streak, and the Wings felt Dubinsky should have been assessed a slashing penalty on the play.

"I just looked at it again," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "The guy (Dubinsky) was beat, he gets turned around, he swings his stick because he's beat a little bit, he breaks our guy's stick, our guy can't play hockey, they go down on a 3-on-2.

"He wasn't poking the puck. I know it was one hand. I don't think a slash is determined by the number of hands on your stick. I think it's the force of the action. That would be my take on it. And certainly the force of the action, (Zetterberg) had just gotten a brand new stick.

"It wasn't like the stick was already broke, so it was disappointing."

The Blue Jackets were more concerned about hacking their way out of two-game losing streak. Columbus, 34-13-5, still hasn't lost three games in a row this season.

"The important thing was getting two points, but it was certainly nice to get our last goal here," Jones said of playing his final game at Joe Louis Arena.

With Detroit, 22-21-10, battling to get back into the Eastern Conference playoff chase, the Blue Jackets expected a tough fight.

"There are about 30 games left, and every team is making their postseason push, so we know we're going to get everyone's A game every night," Jones said. "We were coming off a bad (5-1) loss to New Jersey, and we had to step up."

It was the Wings who stepped up early, opening the scoring just 3:22 into the game. Dylan Larkin picked up a puck in the corner and passed it across ice to a wide-open Nick Jensen, who wired a one-timer past Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky from just outside the faceoff dot.

"The areas that we've been talking about trying to get better at and what we've been emphasizing are good starts, getting better on the power play and limiting turnovers," Detroit defenseman Brendan Smith said. "I thought we did that tonight. I think we're real happy with how that went."

Midway through the opening period, Dubinsky fired a sharp-angled shot toward the Detroit goal. The puck deflected off the leg of Red Wings defenseman Xavier Ouellet and was swatted out of the air past Mrazek by Dubinsky as he went to the net.

With 4:04 remaining in the first period, the Blue Jackets gained the lead. Dubinsky carried the puck into the Detroit zone and dropped a pass to the trailing Cam Atkinson, whose low shot slipped through Mrazek's pads.

"I thought we were better, especially after they blitzed us in the first few minutes," Columbus coach John Tortorella said. "That's how we have to play. We settled the game down, and I thought we were good other than the five-on-three.

"We didn't win the third period, but we won the game, and that's what we needed."

The Red Wings' woeful power play, last in the NHL at 11.3 percent, delivered during that five-on-three advantage at the nine-minute mark of the second period. Justin Abdelkader fired a hard pass across to Thomas Vanek, who was situated on the edge of the Blue Jackets' goal crease. Vanek tipped it home for his team-leading 13th goal of the season.
