TORONTO -- The Toronto Maple Leafs spoiled Connor McDavid's homecoming.

The Leafs defeated the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 in overtime Tuesday night at the Air Canada Centre in McDavid's first NHL game in Toronto.

The Leafs (3-4-3), tied for last in the Atlantic Division, snapped a two-game slide.

The Oilers (7-2-1), who lead the Pacific Division, lost their second straight.

Center Nazem Kadri, whose line was matched up against McDavid's, led the Leafs with two goals, including the winner 12 seconds into overtime. Center Ben Smith had the other Toronto goal.

Center Anton Lander and defenseman Darnell Nurse scored for Edmonton.

"There are a lot of people coming in here thinking it's easy to play the Leafs," Kadri said. "That's part of the identity we're trying to create here -- hard to play against. Coming into Toronto it's going to be a tough building to play against. Like I said, we did a pretty good job and were able to find a way to get two points."

Kadri said it was important to play McDavid physically.

"You don't want him to walk all over you," he said. "Certainly he's a player capable of doing that. He can embarrass you when he gets time and space, so I just tried to limit that from him and stay on top of him as much could out there."

Leafs coach Mike Babcock praised Kadri's all-around effort.

"McDavid played 8:15 in the first period so that helped us too because that's a lot of minutes," he said. "I don't care who you are going out against. That helped us because Naz had only played five. He didn't penalty kill. He was allowed to be fresher. I thought Naz had a good game tonight."

So much had been made of McDavid's first game in Toronto -- he grew up in the north end of the city -- after he missed last year's game with a shoulder injury. Combined with McDavid and Leafs rookie center Auston Matthews facing each other for the first time in the NHL after playing on a line for North America in the recent World Cup of Hockey, there was a lot of drama going into the contest.

But neither McDavid, the first pick overall in the 2015 draft, and Matthews, the top selection this summer, collected a point in the game. McDavid came into the game tied with Philadelphia's Claude Giroux atop the league scoring department with 12 points. McDavid has not registered a point in the last two games.

"We played well defensively," McDavid said. "We did some good stuff and got our shots through."

Of his first game in Toronto, he said: "I grew up watching this building and it was cool to play in."

Oilers coach Todd McClellan said McDavid handled playing in Toronto for the first time with little anxiety.

"He was Connor like he normally is," McLellan said. "He passionately approached the game and gave us everything he had. He's capable of playing high minutes. He's a penalty killer and a power-play guy on any given night. As we play on the road and teams get matches they want, we have to try and disrupt that a little bit. It's early in the season. He's got a lot of energy and a great ability to use him in many different scenarios.

"I liked our attack mentality until about the last 10 minutes in the game. If we would have kept that same shooting mentality we would have had a better opportunity of winning."

Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen repelled 44 of the Oilers' 46 shots. The Leafs took 31 shots on Cam Talbot.
