Bruins 2, Maple Leafs 1 (SO): Patrice Bergeron scored the lone goal of the shootout in the second round to lift host Boston to its fifth consecutive victory.

Bergeron also netted the only tally in regulation for the Bruins, who remained tied in points with Detroit for third place in the Atlantic Division and three ahead of Ottawa. Tuukka Rask made 27 saves before denying all three attempts in the bonus format, icing the victory by stoning Nazem Kadri.

James van Riemsdyk netted the lone goal for Toronto, which suffered its 23rd loss in 24 road games (1-20-3) since winning in Boston on New Year's Eve. The Maple Leafs wasted a magnificent 49-save performance by James Reimer en route to losing 44 games for the first time since 1996-97.

Boston was unable to solve Reimer despite dominating the opening 20 minutes, but Bergeron broke the deadlock just 19 seconds into the second period. After fanning on his first attempt, Bergeron pounced on a rebound and ripped it over a prone Reimer from the bottom of the right faceoff circle.

Toronto drew even 14 minutes later as a blast by defenseman Morgan Rielly got behind Rask and a swipe attempt by Bruins blue-liner Adam McQuaid went in off the stick of van Riemsdyk. Reimer denied Ryan Spooner's point-blank shot in the third period before Toronto defenseman Jake Gardiner prevented a goal by getting the shaft of his stick on a shot from in close by Brad Marchand.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Bergeron tied Marchand for the team lead with his 22nd goal. ... Van Riemsdyk has three goals and two assists in his last three games versus Boston. ... The Bruins matched a season high with 19 shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes. ... Maple Leafs C Trevor Smith (upper body) was hurt in the first period and did not return.
