Capitals 5, Canadiens 4 (SO): Captain Alex Ovechkin scored twice on the power play to become the franchise leader in goals and Troy Brouwer tallied in the fourth round of the shootout as visiting Washington edged Montreal.

Braden Holtby yielded four goals on 27 shots before coming up big in the bonus format. Holtby made a right pad save on Alex Galchenyuk in the first round and denied PA Parenteau and Max Pacioretty in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, before Brouwer lifted a shot over the glove of Carey Price to end the contest.

Ovechkin's goals increased his league-leading total to 52 and his career amount to 474, passing Peter Bondra (472) for the franchise lead. Joel Ward also scored twice and defenseman John Carlson notched three assists for the Capitals, who skated to their third straight win and moved ahead of the New York Islanders for second place in the Metropolitan Division.

P.K. Subban collected a goal and two assists while fellow defensemen Jeff Petry and Tom Gilbert also scored for the Canadiens, who maintained their one-point lead over second-place Tampa Bay in the Atlantic Division. Lars Eller also tallied, Galchenyuk notched two assists and Price turned aside 15 shots in falling to 5-9-4 lifetime versus Washington.

Ovechkin recorded his franchise-best 15th multi-goal performance of the season and 100th career at 11:06 of the third period, shoveling home a rebound from the left doorstep during a power play to forge a 3-3 tie. Ward deflected Carlson's blast 73 seconds later for his second of the contest, but Subban's 15th goal with 4:59 left knotted the game at 4-4.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Petry has scored two goals and set up another during his three-game point streak while Subban has collected two tallies and three assists on his three-game run. ... Linesman Jean Morin, who officiated his final regular-season game, received a warm ovation from the Bell Centre faithful during a stoppage in the first period. ... Former Montreal Expos slugger Vladimir Guerrero was in attendance.
