Blue Jackets 4, Islanders 3 (SO): Ryan Johansen forged a tie late in regulation before scoring in the second round of the shootout as host Columbus matched a franchise record with its eighth consecutive victory.

New York failed to convert on a delay-of-game penalty late in the third period and the Blue Jackets came up empty despite registering all seven shots in overtime. After Mark Letestu shifted from his backhand to forehand before wristing a shot past Jaroslav Halak (36 saves) in the first round of the bonus format, Johansen chipped the puck between the pads of the netminder in the second and Sergei Bobrovsky (25 saves) denied Kyle Okposo to seal the win.

Johansen extended his point streak to nine games by scoring from the doorstep with 3:43 remaining in the third to knot the contest at 3-3. Defenseman Jack Johnson tallied in his career-high third straight contest and Brandon Dubinsky netted a goal for Columbus, which also won eight in a row from Jan 6-23, 2014.

Captain John Tavares scored his team-leading 35th goal and added an assist for the Islanders, who lost for the eighth time in 10 games (2-6-2) and were overtaken by Washington for second place in the Metropolitan Division. Ryan Strome also tallied, Eric Boulton scored his first goal of the season and defenseman Nick Leddy notched two assists.

Tavares redirected defenseman Johnny Boychuk's blast from the blue line past Bobrovsky 2:03 into the second period to give New York a 2-1 lead before Strome cleaned up the rebound of blue-liner Travis Hamonic's slap shot 55 seconds into the third. Johnson batted the puck out of the air from the doorstep at 11:08 to halve the deficit.
