Defenseman Jared Spurgeon's blast from the upper edge of the right circle was deflected by captain Mikko Koivu, allowing Niederreiter to poke home the loose puck from the right doorstep to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead with 6:33 remaining in the third period. St. Louis didn't help itself moments later as Vladimir Tarasenko collided with teammate Zbynek Michalek, allowing Brodziak an uncontested shot from in front to double the advantage.

After a scoreless first period, Backes drew first blood at 4:57 of the second by deflecting Alex Steen's shot from the point past Dubnyk. Minnesota appeared to forge a tie shortly thereafter as Spurgeon's shot caromed off the skate of Zach Parise and into the net, but officials overturned the goal before Vanek deposited Justin Fontaine's centering feed past Elliott at 5:43.
