Coyotes 3, Canucks 2 (SO): Sam Gagner scored the lone goal of the shootout in the first round as host Arizona ended his franchise record-tying losing streak at 10 games.

Tobias Rieder scored for the second straight game and B.J. Crombeen added a tally for the Coyotes, who also snapped a nine-game skid at home - matching the club mark set earlier this season. Mike Smith ended a nine-game losing streak of his own by making 32 saves.

Chris Higgins and former Coyote Radim Vrbata netted goals in the final 7:39 of the third period for Vancouver, which had its lead over Calgary for second place in the Pacific Division reduced to two points. Eddie Lack (33 saves) suffered the loss despite stopping a pair of breakaways in the opening minute of overtime.

Arizona open the scoring with exactly one minute remaining in the first period as the puck caromed off the end boards and past the stick of Lack before going right to Rieder, who scooped a shot into the right corner of the net from the doorstep. The Canucks couldn't solve Smith in the second session despite a 10-2 advantage in shots and the Coyotes doubled their lead 2 1/2 minutes into the third.

Crombeen was credited with the goal as Tye McGinn's shot from the high slot deflected off his skate in front, but Higgins cut the deficit in half with a backhander off a give-and-go with Jannik Hansen with 7:39 remaining in the period. Vancouver drew even with 53.1 seconds left as Vrbata's blast from the right point trickled past Smith.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Coyotes captain Shane Doan appeared in his 1,378th game to tie Joe Sakic, Vincent Damphousse and Dean Prentice for 39th place on the all-time list. ... Canucks captain Henrik Sedin had his point streak halted at eight games. ... Coyotes D Klas Dahlbeck, acquired from Chicago prior to the trade deadline, was credited with his first NHL assist on Arizona's second goal but had it taken away when the tally officially was changed from McGinn to Crombeen after the game.
