Avalanche 3, Penguins 1: Jarome Iginla reached the 20-goal plateau for the 16th time in his career as host Colorado snapped Pittsburgh's four-game winning streak.

Captain Gabriel Landeskog recorded his 17th goal and added two assists as the Avalanche moved within eight points of Minnesota for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference by winning for the fourth time in their last six games. Semyon Varlamov made 12 of his 28 saves in the third period of his 20th consecutive start and Nathan MacKinnon, playing his first game with a broken nose, scored his 14th as Colorado won for only the second time in the last eight meetings.

Evgeni Malkin extended his point streak to six games with his 27th goal for the Penguins, who remained four points behind both the New York Rangers and Islanders in the Metropolitan Division while maintaining a 12-point lead for a playoff berth. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 19 shots in defeat.

Iginla skated untouched through center ice and blasted a shot from above the right faceoff circle past Fleury's right pad 13 seconds into the middle period for the Avalanche's second power-play goal in their last 16 chances. Colorado made it 2-0 with 5:31 remaining in the session, when defenseman Jan Hejda accepted a pass from Landeskog near the left circle and fed MacKinnon, who directed the puck into the net for his fifth goal in five games.

Malkin cut the deficit in half at 9:45 of the third period as he carried the puck down the right-wing boards, swung to the center of the ice and shot his own rebound between defenseman Nick Holden and Varlamov. Landeskog restored the two-goal advantage 5:12 later by putting a move on defenseman Derrick Pouliot and wiring a wrist shot past Fleury, and after the Penguins pulled their netminder with 2:27 left, Varlamov preserved the victory by making three saves.
