Hurricanes 6, Senators 3: Andrej Nestrasil collected a goal and two assists while Jay McClement scored the go-ahead tally late in the second period as visiting Carolina skated to its eighth win in 10 meetings with Ottawa.
Nathan Gerbe and defenseman Michal Jordan each recorded a goal and assist for the Hurricanes, who snapped a two-game skid by posting their third win in eight contests (3-3-2). Jeff Skinner extended his goal-scoring streak to three games, Chris Terry also tallied and Cam Ward finished with 29 saves.
Senators rookie Mike Hoffman also scored in his third straight contest to increase his team-leading goal total to 20. Defenseman Cody Ceci and Erik Condra each added a tally, captain Erik Karlsson notched two assists for the third straight game and Mika Zibanejad also set up a pair of goals.
McClement gave Carolina a 4-3 lead with 54 seconds left in the second period by shoveling the puck into the net as Ottawa's Clarke MacArthur inadvertently collided with Robin Lehner (27 saves). The Senators' duo remained motionless on the ice for several moments and Andrew Hammond (three saves) replaced Lehner to start the third, but Jordan netted his first career goal from the left doorstep during a man advantage at 2:33 and Terry added another power-play tally midway into the session.
Nestrasil backhanded the puck past Lehner from along the end line 6:49 into the contest to open the scoring before Ottawa answered with 1:45 remaining in the first period as Condra cleaned up a rebound at the left doorstep. The teams traded goals 2:44 apart before Gerbe's shot deflected off Karlsson's stick and into the net at 13:26 of the second, but Ceci knotted it 32 seconds later as Zibanejad's pass caromed off him and past Ward.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ottawa D Marc Methot signed a four-year, $19.6 million contract extension on Monday. The deal also includes a modified 10-team no-trade clause. ... Karlsson's multi-assist streak is one game shy of his career best, set from Feb. 20-26, 2012. ... Senators C Shane Prince set up a goal in his NHL debut.
