Blues 6, Lightning 3: Alex Steen recorded a goal and two assists to help visiting St. Louis earn coach Ken Hitchcock his 693rd career victory and fourth place on the NHL’s all-time list.

Captain David Backes and T.J. Oshie each scored a goal and set up another while Paul Stastny, Dmitrij Jaskin and Vladimir Tarasenko also tallied for the Blues, who won for the ninth time in 11 games. Brian Elliott turned aside 26 shots for the victory, his second over Tampa Bay this month and sixth in his last eight decisions overall.

Captain Steven Stamkos registered his 29th goal, Tyler Johnson netted his 20th, Brett Connolly also scored and defenseman Anton Stralman added two assists for the Lightning. Ben Bishop allowed five goals on 34 shots over the first two periods before Andrei Vasilevskiy came on to make nine saves in the third.

Steen set up the first two goals, finding Oshie steaming up the middle 1:50 into the contest and connecting with Jaskin on a long stretch pass during a man advantage 2:57 later. Johnson converted on the power play 8:03 into the second, but Backes stole the puck from Stamkos and unleashed a shot from the slot that was deflected home by Steen at 12:15.

Backes scored from the right faceoff circle after Oshie’s between-the-legs pass at 14:11 and Stastny chipped in a rebound 72 seconds later for a 5-1 lead. Connolly answered later in the second and Stamkos’ redirection at 6:31 of the third pulled the Lightning within two before Tarasenko’s 29th of the season into an empty net with 65 seconds remaining sealed it.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Hitchcock passed Dick Irvin (692) and trails only Scotty Bowman, Al Arbour and Joel Quenneville in NHL coaching victories. … The Blues, who registered a season-low 18 shots on goal in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Lightning on Feb. 3, recorded 17 in each of the first two periods. … Tampa Bay C Vladislav Namestnikov was recalled from Syracuse of the American Hockey League and replaced C Cedric Paquette (upper body) in the lineup.
