Ducks 5, Jets 4 (SO): Defenseman Sami Vatanen made fellow Finn Teemu Selanne's tribute night a complete success as he scored the decisive goal in the sixth round on his first career shootout attempt to give host Anaheim a sweep of the three-game season series.
With Selanne watching from a luxury box, Vatanen skated in on Ondrej Pavelec and beat the netminder to the stick side to help the Ducks improve to 4-2-0 on their season-high eight-game homestand. Rickard Rakell recorded his first career multi-point performance with two goals and two assists, Kyle Palmieri added one of each and Tim Jackman also tallied for Anaheim, which made Selanne's No. 8 the first number retired by the franchise during a pregame ceremony.
Mark Scheifele scored a goal and set up another for the Jets, who concluded a 1-1-1 road trip. Evander Kane, defenseman Zach Bogosian and captain Andrew Ladd also tallied while Pavelec turned aside 39 shots.
Winnipeg opened the scoring at 7:47 of the first period, when Kane sneaked ahead of several players to get to a rebound on the doorstep and put it past Frederik Andersen (28 saves). Rakell jabbed in a loose puck at the top of the crease during a power play 46 seconds later, but Bogosian scored from the bottom of the slot 1:16 afterward to restore the Jets' lead.
Scheifele buried a rebound from the right side of the crease with 5:24 left in the period to make it 3-1 before Jackman beat Pavelec from the low slot at 13:38 of the second to get Anaheim back within one. Ladd made it a two-goal game again with 2:18 remaining by converting a cross-slot pass from Blake Wheeler during a 2-on-1 rush, but Palmieri halved the deficit with a man-advantage tally at 6:25 of the third and Rakell scored following a turnover with 2:03 left to force overtime.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Selanne was honored with a lengthy pregame ceremony that included a number of his former teammates - including Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Saku Koivu, Scott Niedermayer and Guy Hebert - as well as his boyhood idol, fellow Finn Jari Kurri. Selanne's No. 8 also was painted in the ice behind both nets. ... Ladd extended his point streak to six games - and tied him with C Bryan Little for the team lead - with his 16th goal. The 29-year-old has collected four tallies and four assists during the run. ... Rakell, who recorded one goal in his first 53 NHL contests, went six games without a point before matching the franchise rookie record for a single game.
