Hurricanes 2, Bruins 1 (SO): Captain Eric Staal scored in the third round of the shootout and Anton Khudobin denied all three attempts against his former team as host Carolina claimed back-to-back victories for the first time in two months.

The teams failed to score despite having coincidental minor penalties force 3-on-3 action over the final 63 seconds of overtime. Staal, who saw his three-game goal-scoring streak and four-game point stretch come to an end, skated in and wristed a shot inside the left post in the third round of the bonus format before Patrice Bergeron was thwarted to end the game.

Fourth-liner Patrick Dwyer scored late in the first period for the Hurricanes, who last won consecutive contests during a four-game winning streak from Nov. 1-7. Khudobin turned aside 19 shots to win his second straight start after posting an 0-8-2 mark in his previous 10.

Bergeron scored in the second period for the Bruins, who have dropped three in a row (0-0-3) and 13 of their last 19 overall (6-7-6) while falling to 1-5-1 on the second leg of back-to-back games this season. Tuukka Rask finished with 35 saves and Brad Marchand and defenseman Dougie Hamilton each notched an assist on Bergeron's eighth goal of the campaign.

Jay McClement's shot from the slot was denied by Rask, but Dwyer gained inside position on defenseman Adam McQuaid and backhanded home the loose puck to open the scoring with 34 seconds remaining in the first period. The slim advantage held until Marchand skated behind the net before setting up Bergeron, who one-timed a low shot from near the upper edge of the right circle with 5:25 remaining in the second.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Carolina C Brad Malone followed up his first goal in Friday's 2-1 victory over Philadelphia with an assist on Dwyer's goal. ... Boston RW Reilly Smith recorded his team's first shot of the contest with 3:05 remaining in the first period. He was denied from point-blank range from the right circle. ... Khudobin posted a 10-4-1 mark in 15 career contests spread over two seasons with the Bruins.
