Hurricanes 2, Devils 1 (SO): Chris Terry scored the lone shootout goal in the third round as Carolina rallied for a rare road victory.

Neither team was able to break through over the first two rounds of the bonus format and Anton Khudobin denied Adam Henrique to start the third before Terry used a backhand deke before sliding the puck under Cory Schneider to give the Hurricanes their second win in 10 contests (2-7-1). Defenseman Ron Hainsey scored the tying goal in the latter half of the third period and Khudobin made 18 saves en route to his first victory of the season (1-8-2) as Carolina improved to 4-13-2 on the road.

Stephen Gionta netted the lone goal for the Devils, who completed a 1-2-1 homestand. Schneider turned aside 32 shots in his league-leading 32nd start of the campaign as New Jersey fell to 1-4-3 since winning at Carolina on Dec. 8.

New Jersey took advantage of an odd-man rush to get on the board with 6:28 remaining in the first period. Steve Bernier led a 4-on-2 charge down the right wing and made a back pass to Gionta, whose one-timer from above the right faceoff circle glanced off Carolina defenseman Michal Jordan's stick and past Khudobin.

The Hurricanes pulled even with eight minutes left in the third as Patrick Dwyer's deflection of defenseman Andrej Sekera's shot from the outer edge of the left circle went in off Hainsey in front. New Jersey failed to convert a power-play opportunity that carried into overtime and Hainsey was denied by Schneider on a breakaway after exiting the penalty box before Khudobin stopped Henrique's chance from alone in front in the final seconds of the extra session.
