Canucks 3, Flames 2 (OT): Defenseman Chris Tanev celebrated his 25th birthday by scoring 18 seconds into overtime as host Vancouver defeated Calgary for the ninth straight time and snapped its five-game winless streak (0-4-1).
After the Flames missed the net to begin overtime, Canucks captain Henrik Sedin skated up the left wing before feeding an unmarked Tanev in the slot. The blue-liner sized up his shot and beat Jonas Hiller inside the right post for his second goal of the season.
The victory helped lift the spirits of the Canucks, who saw Jannik Hansen collapse on the bench following a collision with Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman in the second period. Teammates promptly signaled to the medical staff for help and for the officials to stop the game for Hansen, who was able to walk down the tunnel on his own but did not return to the contest as a precautionary measure.
Defenseman Yannick Weber was credited with the tally after an own-goal and Radim Vrbata scored on the power play for Vancouver, which posted its first victory since a 3-0 triumph over Pittsburgh on Dec. 4. Daniel Sedin notched two assists and Ryan Miller finished with 26 saves.
David Jones and Johnny Gaudreau scored for the Flames, who have dropped eight in a row (0-7-1). Hiller turned aside 30 shots in suffering his seventh straight setback.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Vancouver D Luca Sbisa was whistled for tripping and Hiller exited the net for an extra attacker, but Wideman's attempted pass back to the point eluded former Canuck Mason Raymond and skidded along the ice into the unguarded goal at 4:40 of the first period. ... Vrbata scored from the doorstep at 9:24 of the first to give Vancouver a 2-0 lead and end the club's 0-for-19 stretch on the power play. Jones scored on the rebound of his own deflection at 12:29 of the second period to halve the deficit before Gaudreau ripped RW Jiri Hudler's backhanded feed between the pads of Miller at 7:05 of the third. ... Calgary D Deryk Engelland notched an assist on Gaudreau's goal for his 50th career point.
