Panthers 2, Capitals 1 (SO): Nick Bjugstad ended the longest shootout in NHL history by converting in the 20th round as Florida improved to 4-0-1 in its last five home games.

After hitting the left post in the second round, Bjugstad made a nifty deke to put Braden Holtby out of position before burying his shot for the winner. Derek MacKenzie scored in regulation and Roberto Luongo made 23 saves for the Panthers, who are 4-1-2 in their last seven overall.

Troy Brouwer tallied for the Capitals, who extended their point streak to six games (4-0-2). Holtby turned aside 28 shots in falling to 6-0-1 lifetime against the Panthers.

Florida capitalized on a turnover to open the scoring midway through the first period. Washington defenseman Mike Green's backhand pass attempt from behind the net hit the skate of Scottie Upshall and the puck went right to MacKenzie, who fired it past Holtby from the right faceoff circle at 9:36.

The Capitals pulled even during a power play with 5:25 remaining in the second session. Brouwer received a cross-slot pass from the left circle by captain Alex Ovechkin and had his first shot blocked before burying his second opportunity from the bottom of the slot.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Washington also participated in the previous longest NHL shootout, losing in 15 rounds to the New York Rangers on Nov. 26, 2005. ... Luongo's victory was the 384th of his career, putting him one behind Mike Vernon for 12th place on the all-time list. ... The Capitals are 10-0-2 in their last 12 meetings with the Panthers.
