Maple Leafs 5, Stars 3: Joffrey Lupul recorded his first two-goal performance in a year as host Toronto extended its point streak to five games.
Nazem Kadri scored a goal and set up two others while Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel also tallied as the Maple Leafs continued their offensive fireworks, pouring in 23 goals during their 4-0-1 stretch. Mike Santorelli collected three assists while defensemen Dion Phaneuf and Cody Franson added two apiece to back Jonathan Bernier (35 saves).
Jason Spezza, Ryan Garbutt and Ales Hemsky scored for Dallas, which has dropped three in a row (0-2-1) - surrendering five goals in each loss. Defenseman Alex Goligoski chipped in a pair of assists and Kari Lehtonen turned aside 35 shots in falling to 3-6-2 lifetime against Toronto.
Both of Lupul's tallies restored three-goal leads for the Maple Leafs, who improved to 10-0-0 when scoring first. Lupul answered Spezza's goal at 5:06 of the second period by burying a rebound into a gaping net 4 1/2 minutes later, and he followed Garbutt's early third-period tally by banging home another rebound at 5:20 to make it 5-2.
Bozak opened the scoring 27 seconds into the contest following two half-hearted clearing attempts by the Stars and Kadri doubled the lead with 4:44 left in the first period by ripping a shot past Lehtonen from the high slot. Toronto struck during a power play in the opening minute of the second as Kessel converted from the left faceoff circle with James van Riemsdyk screening Lehtonen.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Lupul's last two-goal effort came on Dec. 14, while the two assists by Franson gave him 14 points in his last 13 games. ... Garbutt scored in his return to the lineup after serving a two-game suspension for his knee-on-knee hit against Edmonton's Taylor Hall, but RW Patrick Eaves exited the contest with a lower-body injury. ... Maple Leafs C Leo Komarov was not in the lineup after taking a blow to the head from Washington's Alex Ovechkin in Saturday's game.
