Canadiens 2, Flames 1 (SO): PA Parenteau scored the lone goal of the shootout in the third round as visiting Montreal posted its fifth win in six games.
Neither team was able to break through over the first two rounds of the bonus format and Carey Price denied Johnny Gaudreau on Calgary's third attempt, although the rookie sent the crowd into a frenzy by firing the rebound into the net. The goal was not allowed, and Parenteau turned excitement into disappointment by beating Jonas Hiller with a quick wrist shot.
Defenseman Tom Gilbert scored in regulation for the Canadiens, who are 1-1-0 on their three-game road trip. Price turned aside 37 shots, helping Montreal successfully kill seven short-handed situations.
Captain Mark Giordano tallied for the Flames, who fell to 1-1-2 on their five-game homestand. Gaudreau and defenseman TJ Brodie each recorded an assist while Hiller finished with 18 saves.
After a scoreless first period, Calgary grabbed the lead just 2:09 into the second as Giordano received a pass from Gaudreau and unleashed a shot from the top of the slot that beat Price high to the glove side for his second goal of the season. Gilbert forged a tie with 7:12 left in the session, when his shot from high along the right-wing boards sailed past Hiller and inside the left post.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Calgary's Joe Colborne was injured in the second period while fellow C Matt Stajan was on the receiving end of a knee-on-knee hit by Montreal D Jarred Tinordi midway through the third. Neither player returned to the contest. ... The Canadiens have scored a total of one goal over the first two games of their road trip. ...
