Sharks 3, Avalanche 2 (SO): Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski scored in the first two rounds of the shootout as visiting San Jose outlasted Colorado.

Logan Couture netted the tying goal early in the third period and defenseman Brent Burns also tallied for the Sharks, who outshot the Avalanche 51-33 in winning their second straight contest. Antti Niemi made 31 saves and denied both attempts in the bonus format to send Colorado to its sixth loss in seven games (1-2-4).

Alex Tanguay recorded a short-handed goal and captain Gabriel Landeskog also scored for Colorado, which has won only twice in 10 games one season after starting 12-1-0. Defenseman Jan Hejda notched two assists while Semyon Varlamov was magnificent for the Avalanche with 49 saves - 40 in the first 40 minutes.

Despite the fact it was outshot by a staggering 41-17 margin through two periods, Colorado grabbed a 2-1 lead three minutes into the third as Landeskog burst down the left wing and beat Niemi from the bottom of the faceoff circle. Couture tied it for the Sharks two minutes later, collecting the puck after it caromed off the post and scooping it past Varlamov at 5:03.

San Jose poured 23 shots on Varlamov in the opening period and went ahead when Burns deflected a blast from the point by rookie defenseman Mirco Mueller at 9:23. The Avalanche drew even with 6:36 left in the second, when Tanguay pounced on a bouncing puck and drew Niemi out of the net before lifting a shot over him.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Burns extended his point streak to five games with his opening tally while Tanguay scored his fourth goal during a six-game point run. ...
