Islanders 7, Stars 5: Frans Nielsen recorded a hat trick in the third period as host New York outslugged Dallas to secure its second straight victory.

Brock Nelson scored his team-leading fifth goal and added an assist for the Islanders, who won both meetings with the Stars last season. Nikolay Kulemin converted with his team short-handed and joined defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky with a goal and an assist while Anders Lee also tallied.

Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza each collected a goal and an assist to extend their respective point streaks to five games. Antoine Roussel, Vernon Fiddler and Shawn Horcoff also tallied for Dallas, which saw its three-game road winning streak come to a halt and fell for just the second time in six overall contests (4-1-1).

After Seguin hit the post at one end, New York quickly moved the puck up ice before Nielsen received a return pass from Kulemin during a 2-on-1 rush and wristed a shot past Anders Lindback (22 saves) at 9:39 of the third to give the Islanders a 5-4 lead. Nielsen converted another 2-on-1 rush at 15:09 and answered Horcoff's tally, which came 23 seconds later, by scoring into the empty net just before time expired.

Four minutes after Nelson cleaned up a rebound at 1:25 of the second to give New York a 3-1 lead, Seguin's wrist shot from the right faceoff circle beat Chad Johnson (26 saves), and Spezza forged a tie at 6:50 of the session with a blast from the top of the right circle. Roussel chipped home the rebound of defenseman Alex Goligoski's shot with 4:10 left in the period, but Visnovsky answered 30 seconds later to knot it up again.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Dallas captain Jamie Benn notched an assist but saw his five-game goal-scoring streak come to an end. ... The teams traded goals before Goligoski and Spezza fumbled an exchange in the neutral zone, leading to Kulemin turning on the jets before beating Lindback with a wrist shot from the right circle with 1:18 remaining in the first period to give New York a 2-1 lead. ... Islanders C Mikhail Grabovski notched an assist in his return to the ice from a concussion.
