Jets 3, Hurricanes 1: Captain Andrew Ladd and Adam Lowry scored 40 seconds apart early in the first period as host Winnipeg halted a four-game losing streak while keeping Carolina winless.
Dustin Byfuglien added a second-period goal for the Jets, who were outscored 13-2 during their slide. Ondrej Pavelec made 21 saves to earn the win.
Jiri Tlusty had the lone goal for the Hurricanes, who tied a franchise record with their fifth straight loss to open the season (0-3-2). Anton Khudobin turned aside 23 shots in defeat.
Winnipeg opened the scoring in bizarre fashion less than two minutes into the game, as Ladd flipped a shot toward the net that slid down Khudobin's back and barely crossed the line. Lowry put the Jets up 2-0 at 2:37, redirecting defenseman Grant Clitsome's point shot past a fooled Khudobin for his first career NHL goal.
Tlusty drew Carolina within a goal on a redirection of a Riley Nash shot just past the seven-minute mark, but Byfuglien restored the two-goal edge with 3:34 remaining in the second period, bursting in alone down the right side and converting a backhand shot between Khudobin's pads. The Hurricanes didn't threaten the rest of the way, managing just eight third-period shots en route to their worst start since 1987-88 when they were known as the Hartford Whalers.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ladd's goal was upheld after a lengthy video review. ... Jets head coach Paul Maurice served a pair of stints with the Carolina franchise, posting a 384-391-99-46 career record with four playoff appearances. ... Winnipeg went 0-for-5 on the power play and is scoreless in 19 man-advantage opportunities to open the campaign.
