Capitals 4, Bruins 0: Captain Alex Ovechkin scored a pair of first-period goals and Braden Holtby turned aside 29 shots as visiting Washington blanked Boston.

Defenseman Mike Green and Joel Ward added a goal apiece as the Capitals rebounded from a 2-1 shootout loss to Montreal in their season opener. Holtby stopped 14 shots in the opening 20 minutes en route to his 12th career shutout while rookie Andre Burakovsky, defenseman John Carlson and Nicklas Backstrom each collected two assists.

Tuukka Rask made 17 saves for the Bruins, who dropped their second straight and have scored only three goals in their first three games. Boston came up empty on four power-play chances to fall to 1-for-10 on the season.

Washington got on the scoreboard on the power play at 11:26 of the opening period, when Ovechkin received a pass from Carlson and buried a one-timer from his patented spot near the left faceoff dot. He doubled the lead seven minutes later, finding a seam in Boston's defense and burying Backstrom's pass from the bottom of the left circle.

The Bruins held a 14-7 advantage in shots in the opening 20 minutes but were unable to solve Holtby and saw the deficit grow to three goals midway through the middle session. Green did the honors this time, hammering home a one-timer from the left circle, before Ward capped the scoring with 74 seconds to play.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Bruins LW Milan Lucic, who failed to record a shot on goal in his first two games, had only one before drawing a 10-minute misconduct with just over 3 1/2 minutes to play. ... Green was back in the lineup for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury against Boston in a preseason game on Sept. 26. ... Rask had his eight-game home unbeaten streak (7-0-1) halted with his first loss at TD Garden since a 4-2 setback to Washington on March 1.
