Islanders 4, Sabres 3 (SO): Brock Nelson scored the tying goal with 3:44 in regulation and netted the only tally in the shootout to lift visiting New York in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Anders Lee scored a pair of goals and Josh Bailey and Frans Nielsen collected two assists each as the Islanders closed with a three-game winning streak and won for the eighth time in the final 12 games (8-2-2). Anders Nilsson made 36 saves and denied all three attempts in the shootout to send Buffalo to its seventh consecutive defeat (0-6-1).

Defenseman Jamie McBain, Matt Ellis and Torrey Mitchell scored for the Sabres, who set a league record for the fewest goals in the post-expansion era with 150 - one less than the record set by Tampa Bay in 1997-98. Connor Knapp had 22 saves in his first NHL start as Buffalo lost for the 18th time in 20 games (2-17-1).

A fortunate bounce helped New York cut a 2-0 deficit in half late in the second period when Nielsen's pass from behind the net popped into the air and landed in the crease, allowing Lee to poke it through the legs of Knapp at 16:37. Lee tied it 17 seconds into the third with a soft backhander from the right circle on which Knapp overplayed the angle.

Mitchell redirected a blast from Rasmus Ristolainen midway through the third to put the Sabres ahead with his first goal since Nov. 3, but Nelson notched the equalizer with at 16:16 with a wrist shot that beat Knapp high to his glove side. McBain opened the scoring midway through the first period before Ellis doubled the lead at 7:23 of the second with a backhand chip of Marcus Foligno's pass into the slot.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Knapp became the first goaltender to record an assist in his first career start since current Boston netminder Chad Johnson did it as a member of the New York Rangers on Jan. 7, 2010 against Winnipeg. ... Bailey's two assists gave him 30 for the season and 10 points over his last nine games. ... Buffalo called up G Andrey Makarov, D Mark Pysyk and F Nicolas Deslauriers from Rochester of the American Hockey League after G Matt Hackett (lower body), Ds Christian Ehrhoff (concussion), F Chris Stewart (leg), F Matt D'Agostini (lower body) and F Brian Flynn (lower body) were all injured in Saturday's loss to Boston.
