Senators 2, Devils 1 (SO): Defenseman Erik Karlsson scored the only goal of the shootout in the fourth round as host Ottawa handed New Jersey its NHL-record 16th consecutive loss in the bonus format.

Mike Hoffman scored in the second period to help lift the Senators to their third straight win and drop the Devils to 0-12 in the shootout this season. Robin Lehner made 38 saves en route to winning his third start in a row.

Michael Ryder scored the lone goal for New Jersey, which lost in a shootout for the fourth time in the last eight games and saw its string of futility in the format reach 13 months dating to March 10, 2013. Cory Schneider (31 saves) took the loss despite permitting only one goal for the fourth consecutive start.

Ottawa squandered a chance to break a scoreless deadlock at 10:48 of the second period, when Schneider thwarted Ales Hemsky on a penalty shot, but the Senators broke through 32 seconds later. Mika Zibanejad skated down the right side and toward the net before sending a pass to a trailing Hoffman, who buried a shot from the slot.

The Devils got the equalizer seven minutes later on a delayed penalty as Tim Sestito's pass went off defenseman Anton Volchenkov to a waiting Ryder at the left side of the net for an easy conversion. Lehner kept it tied by denying Patrik Elias and Stephen Gionta within seconds midway through the third period.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Zibanejad left the game early in the third period with an undisclosed injury and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. ... Ryder's goal was only his second in 34 games, while Volchenkov's assist was his first since Jan. 21. ... Hoffman's tally, his third of the season, ended a 10-game goalless drought. ... Elias returned to the lineup after missing two games with a head injury, but C Adam Henrique (groin), D Bryce Salvador (groin), LW Ryane Clowe (head) and C Jacob Josefson (left foot) did not accompany the team to Ottawa.
