Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen had a goal and an assist each, Jonathan Drouin and Logan O'Connor had goals, defenseman Cale Makar added two assists, and Alexandar Georgiev turned away 22 shots for Colorado.
The Avalanche held possession for most of the overtime but the Coyotes got the winner when McBain knocked in Zucker's rebound with 20 seconds remaining. It was his sixth of the season.
Colorado struck first on the power play when MacKinnon sent a pass through the slot to Rantanen at the bottom of the right circle, and Rantanen scored on a one-timer at 18:16 of the opening period. It was his 18th goal of the season.
It also extended MacKinnon's point streak to 19 games, the longest in the NHL this season.
Colorado went ahead 2-0 early in the second when Drouin scored at 1:04, his fifth of the season, and O'Connor padded the lead when he stuffed a puck off Vejmelka's skate at 7:56, his fifth goal of the season.
Colorado capitalized on a five-on-three power play when MacKinnon beat Vejmelka high to make it 4-0 at 13:26, MacKinnon's 19th of the season.
Arizona began its comeback when Crouse deflected Nick Bjugstad's pass from the boards by Georgiev at 16:31 of the second, his 15th of the season.
Kesselring made it 4-2 just 3:48 into the third when his wrister from the right circle beat Georgiev to the far side. It was his fourth of the season. Zucker then cut the deficit to one with his sixth goal of the season at 7:04.
Vejmelka came off for an extra skater and Durzi scored with a shot from the point at 17:53, his sixth of the season, to send it to overtime.
