Pavel Buchnevich scored one goal and set up another as the St. Louis Blues defeated the visiting Montreal Canadiens 4-1 Saturday for their seventh straight home victory.
Dakota Joshua, Ivan Barbashev and Torey Krug also scored for the Blues, who have won three straight overall. Vladimir Tarasenko, Ryan O'Reilly and Logan Brown each earned two assists.
The Blues were missing nine players due to injuries and COVID-19 protocols, including top goaltenders Jordan Binnington and Ville Husso. As a result, they played six players promoted from Springfield of the AHL.
One of them, goaltender Charlie Lindgren, made 22 saves to earn the victory. During the game Blues forward Jordan Kyrou exited the game with an undisclosed injury.
Alexander Romanov scored and former Blues goaltender Jake Allen made 33 saves for the Canadiens, who are winless (0-5-1) in their last six games and 2-10-2 in their last 14.
Buchnevich put the Blues up 1-0 lead just 63 seconds into the game. After Allen turned the puck over behind his own net, Buchnevich tried to feed Tarasenko with a cross-crease pass. Allen blocked that pass, but the puck caromed back to Buchnevich for a point-blank shot.
The Blues doubled their lead to 2-0 off a 2-on-1 rush midway through the second period. Brown broke in on left wing and fed Joshua coming down the middle to score.
Barbashev's power-play goal, scored from the slot off Tarasenko's pass, made it 3-0 with 4:40 left in the period.
The Blues outshot the Canadiens 23-12 during the first two periods.
Romanov put the Canadiens on the board 1:57 into the third period, blasting a shot from the slot after Lindgren turned the puck over behind his net and created a defensive zone scramble.
But Krug countered with a power-play goal, stepping in from the left point to hammer a slap shot past Allen.
