Maple Leafs 4, Lightning 1: Jonathan Bernier turned aside 33 shots and James van Riemsdyk scored his 23rd goal as visiting Toronto defeated Tampa Bay for the second time in 10 days.

Mason Raymond, Jay McClement and Tyler Bozak also tallied while Phil Kessel notched two assists for the Maple Leafs, who moved within a point of the second-place Lightning in the Atlantic Division. Bernier, who made 40 saves to beat Tampa Bay 3-2 on Jan. 28, helped Toronto improve to 10-2-1 in its last 13 games.

Ben Bishop allowed one goal on 22 shots before leaving after two periods with an upper-body injury. Cedrick Desjardins made 11 saves in the final session and Ondrej Palat scored for Tampa Bay, which also lost second-leading scorer Valtteri Filppula to a lower-body injury in the third period.

Both goaltenders shined in a scoreless first period as Bishop turned aside 12 shots and Bernier made nine saves. The Maple Leafs seized the lead 7:57 into the middle session, when Raymond took a pass from Nikolai Kulemin and zipped around the Lightning defense before flipping a backhand shot over Bishop.

McClement doubled the lead 2:19 into the third, taking a pass from David Clarkson and switching to his backhand in front to slide the puck past Desjardins. Toronto made it 3-0 when van Riemsdyk chipped in a rebound at 8:10 before Palat scored on a breakaway at 10:28 to spoil Bernier’s shutout bid.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay captain Martin St. Louis, who had an assist, was named to replace teammate Steven Stamkos on the Canadian Olympic team earlier in the day. Stamkos was not cleared to play after undergoing a CT scan on Wednesday on his right tibia, which was broken Nov. 11. … Toronto D Cody Franson played his 300th NHL game. … The Maple Leafs have won seven of their last nine meetings with Tampa Bay.
