Ducks 3, Red Wings 2 (OT): Nick Bonino scored 1:54 into overtime as host Anaheim seized a 3-2 lead in its Western Conference first-round series with seventh-seeded Detroit.
Ben Lovejoy struggled to settle the puck along the right-wing boards on his initial shot attempt in overtime. The defenseman elected to skate along the goal line before backhanding a centering feed through the crease to Bonino, who made no mistake from the doorstep to end the contest.
Captain Ryan Getzlaf matched Bonino with his third goal of the series and Kyle Palmieri also tallied. Jonas Hiller turned aside 29 shots for the second-seeded Ducks, who will look to wrap up the series at Joe Louis Arena on Friday.
Mikael Samuelsson scored his 23rd career postseason goal and Johan Franzen tallied for the third time in the series. Captain Henrik Zetterberg notched a pair of assists and Jimmy Howard finished with 31 saves for the Red Wings, who recorded a 5-4 overtime victory in Game 2 and a 3-2 triumph in the extra session in Game 4.
Playing in place of the suspended Justin Abdelkader, Samuelsson gave Detroit a 2-1 lead at 10:08 of the second period by cleaning up the rebound of Zetterberg's shot from the point. Getzlaf forged a tie with 32 seconds left in the session as he skated through the neutral zone and up the slot before wristing a shot past a screened Howard for his 21st career playoff goal.
GAME NOTEBOOK: NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was in attendance at the Honda Center. ... Franzen opened the scoring at 5:28 of the first period, when his sharp-angle shot from below the end line caromed off the right skate of Ducks D Sheldon Souray. Franzen used his long reach to tap home his own rebound. Palmieri knotted the contest as his turnaround wrist shot beat a screened Howard with 2:19 remaining in the session. ... Red Wings RW Danny Cleary exited the game with 5:45 remaining in the second period after taking a brutal hit from Ducks C Daniel Winnik, who was whistled for a five-minute boarding penalty. Cleary returned to start the third period. ... Abdelkader served the final contest of his two-game suspension for an illegal hit on Anaheim D Toni Lydman in Game 3. Lydman sat out the last two contests.
