Bernier caused a turnover, then went to the right side of the net to backhand in a pass from Ryan Carter 3:42 into the contest for a 1-0 lead. The Panthers tied it on the power play with 7:05 left in the first period, when rookie Jonathan Huberdeau’s pass from the right circle deflected off Matthias’ skate at the top of the crease and past Brodeur.

Brodeur turned aside all 13 shots he faced in the second, including a big stop on a rebound attempt by Marcel Goc with 4:24 remaining. Bernier moved in front of the net and deflected defenseman Henrik Tallinder’s shot from the high slot under Markstrom for his second goal 7:57 into the third session.
