P.A. Parenteau snapped a tie with 1:46 remaining in the third period as the New York Islanders halted their six-game losing streak with a 5-3 triumph over the visiting Washington Capitals on Saturday.
Milan Jurcina unleashed a slap shot from the right point that Tomas Vokoun stopped. But the puck trickled into the crease and Parenteau knocked it into the net for a 4-3 lead.
Frans Nielsen had a goal and two assists, Brian Rolston, Matt Martin and John Tavares also scored and Parenteau set up a pair of tallies for New York, which posted its first regulation victory over Washington since Oct. 18, 2007.
Martin had given the Islanders a 3-2 edge when he backhanded a rebound past Vokoun from the doorstep 6 1/2 minutes into the third. The lead lasted less than three minutes, however, as Brooks Laich beat Rick DiPietro with a snap shot from the left circle during a power play.
Alex Ovechkin and Joel Ward also tallied and Nicklas Backstrom added two assists for Washington, which had won six straight both overall and on the road against New York.
