Defenseman Brent Burns scored a controversial power-play goal at 1:07 of overtime as the San Jose Sharks remained perfect on their six-game road trip with a 3-2 triumph over the New York Islanders on Saturday.
New York's Travis Hamonic was called for delay of game 29 seconds into the extra session, even though video replay clearly showed the puck caromed off the glass before going out of play. Burns, who also notched an assist, took advantage of the bad call by wristing a shot from the right faceoff circle into the top left corner of the net and handing the Islanders their fifth straight loss.
Joe Pavelski had a goal and an assist, Logan Couture also scored and Dan Boyle added two assists for the Sharks, who are 5-0-0 on their trek that ends Monday against the New York Rangers. San Jose has won four straight meetings with the Islanders and are 6-1-1 in their last eight on Long Island.
It took San Jose just 17 seconds to take a 1-0 lead. Islanders defenseman Steve Staios was called for cross-checking 10 seconds into the game, and Pavelski buried a backhander seven seconds later for his seventh goal of the season.
John Tavares evened the contest early in the second with a power-play goal of his own. Tavares entered having scored six of the Islanders' 16 tallies this campaign.
Michael Grabner put the Islanders ahead midway through the second with a man-advantage goal, but Couture forged another tie less than two minutes later. Both Grabner and Couture were finalists for last season's Calder Trophy, which was won by Carolina's Jeff Skinner.
