The Carolina Hurricanes got a goal and two assists from Chad LaRose and 41 saves from Cam Ward on their way to a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.
Eric Staal opened the scoring with a short-handed marker from LaRose and Anton Babchuk at the 5:56-mark of the first and Erik Cole added his first of the year with less than three minutes left in the opening period.
Patrick Dwyer made it 3-0 when he slammed in a rebound 2:43 into the second before the Sharks woke up. Patrick Marleau cut into the lead at 6:34 on a deflection in front from Dan Boyle and Joe Thornton and then added his second of the season on the power play a little more than three minutes later.
Carolina restored the two-goal lead when Staal caused a turnover deep in San Jose’s zone and set up LaRose in front for his first of the year 2:11 into the third.
Joni Pitkanen added another with a rising slap shot over Antti Niemi’s shoulder.
Niemi stopped 26 of 31 shots he faced.
