Coyotes 4, Lightning 3 (SO): Radim Vrbata scored the only goal of the shootout in the second round as visiting Phoenix extended Tampa Bay’s winless streak to five games.

Vrbata, a former member of the Lightning, deked to his backhand to beat Ben Bishop, and Mike Smith denied Ryan Callahan on Tampa Bay's final chance. Brandon McMillan registered his second goal in as many games, Martin Erat and Mikkel Boedker also scored for the Coyotes and Smith made 28 saves against his former team

Ondrej Palat scored two goals - including the tying tally in the final minute of the third period - and added an assist while Tyler Johnson recorded his fourth short-hander of the season for the Lightning. Bishop turned aside 17 shots as Tampa Bay fell to 0-3-2 in its last five.

Johnson zipped around fallen Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle before flipping a backhander that beat Smith to the glove side 11:26 into the contest for his 20th goal. McMillan tracked down a rebound and stuffed the puck under Bishop’s right pad 61 seconds into the second session to tie it.

Callahan set up Palat for the go-ahead goal with 53 seconds left in the period, but Erat capitalized on a turnover 2:13 into the third to forge another deadlock. Boedker’s backhander during 4-on-4 play put Phoenix up with 12:12 left in regulation, but Palat shoveled home a pass from Valtteri Filppula with 37.2 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Johnson's goal was Tampa Bay’s ninth short-hander of the season and third in three games after it recorded only five over the previous four campaigns. … Lightning D Radko Gudas and Phoenix C Martin Hanzal each missed their fourth consecutive game while Tampa Bay D Sami Salo was lost after the first period – all with lower-body injuries. … Erat’s goal was his first in three games with the Coyotes since being acquired from Washington and second overall this season.
