Penguins 3, Capitals 2: Chris Kunitz scored twice and captain Sidney Crosby added a power-play goal and two assists as visiting Pittsburgh upended Washington.

Kunitz and Crosby both reached the 30-goal plateau as the Penguins moved back ahead of Boston by one point for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Lee Stempniak added two assists while Jeff Zatkoff turned aside 31 shots to earn the win.

Eric Fehr and Nicklas Backstrom scored for the Capitals, who have lost four of their last five games. Jaroslav Halak made 17 saves in defeat.

Kunitz opened the scoring only 46 seconds into the game, gathering a pass from Crosby at the Washington blue line before beating his defender wide and flipping a backhander past Halak. Fehr tied it on a tip-in at 3:03, but Crosby replied 49 seconds later by blasting a one-time feed from Evgeni Malkin past Halak from the top of the right faceoff circle.

Backstrom drew the Capitals even during a power play at 8:57 of the middle period, but Kunitz's second of the night - a tap-in after Stempniak's initial shot was stopped - moved the Penguins back in front at 12:40. Zatkoff made the lead stand with 16 saves in the period and Pittsburgh's defense handled things in the third, limiting the Capitals to seven shots and killing off a too-many-men penalty in the final 2:17.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Crosby reached the 30-goal plateau for the sixth time in his career, while Kunitz achieved the feat for the first time. ... Zatkoff earned his first victory since Jan. 30 versus the Los Angeles Kings. ... Halak fell to 1-1-0 since coming to the Capitals in a deadline-day trade with the Buffalo Sabres.
