Islanders 3, Jets 2 (OT): Michael Grabner scored on a breakaway 3:53 into overtime to lift New York in the opener of its four-game road trip.
Grabner and rookie Anders Lee each recorded a goal and an assist while Colin McDonald also tallied as the Islanders won for only the third time in 12 games (3-8-1) and improved to a perfect 6-0-0 beyond regulation on the road this season. Anders Nilsson turned aside 36 shots en route to his second win.
Captain Andrew Ladd scored both goals for Winnipeg, which missed a chance to tie Dallas for the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Ondrej Pavelec made 24 saves but lost his fifth straight start against New York.
Lee put the Islanders in front 2-1 on a breakaway 1:33 into the second period, batting in the rebound of his initial shot with the heel of his stick just inches below the crossbar. Ladd netted the equalizer with 5:07 left in the third, when former Islander Olli Jokinen sent him in on a breakaway for his fifth goal in six games.
Ladd opened the scoring just past the midway point of the opening period, gaining control off a faceoff and cutting to the middle before beating Nilsson between the pads. McDonald tied it 6 1/2 minutes later, knocking in the puck after Ryan Strome's blast went wide and richocheted off the end boards.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Jets fell to 11-3-2 under Paul Maurice, who became the 16th coach in league history to reach 1,100 games. ... The Islanders traded D Andrew MacDonald to Philadelphia for minor-league C Matt Mangene and two draft picks - a third-round selection in 2014 and a second-round choice in 2015. LW Thomas Vanek was a healthy scratch for New York in anticipation of being dealt before Wednesday afternoon's trade deadline, with San Jose rumored to be among the possible destinations. ... Jets rookie C Mark Scheifele was helped to the locker room in the second period after a knee-on-knee collision with New York D Calvin de Haan, while Islanders LW Eric Boulton did not return after hurting his hand in a first-period fight with Winnipeg D Mark Stuart.
