Troy Smith threw a touchdown pass and ran for another to lead the San Francisco 49ers to a 24-16 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday in the NFL’s fourth annual game in London.

The Broncos’ Eddie Royal returned a punt 78 yards for an apparent touchdown which would have made it 24-22 with 1:54 left, but Jarvis Moss was penalized for an illegal block in the back.

The Broncos (2-6) then drove 36 yards to the 49ers’ 45-yard line before Kyle Orton was intercepted by Shawntae Spencer with 38 seconds left.

Smith’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree with 7:23 remaining broke a 10-10 tie. His 1-yard run with 11:57 left in the fourth quarter tied the game 10-10.

Frank Gore rushed for 118 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown run with 3:23 left to make it 24-10 for San Francisco (2-6).

Tim Tebow’s 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave the Broncos a 7-3 lead.

Orton finished 28 of 40 for 369 yards and a 1-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Lloyd.

Troy Smith, who started in place of the injured Alex Smith, finished 12 of 19 for 196 yards. Justin Smith had two sacks for the 49ers.

The Broncos have lost 14 of their last 18 games.
