No. 7 UCLA 28, Virginia 20: Brett Hundley rushed for a score and the Bruins’ defense tallied three touchdowns in the nonconference victory over the host Cavaliers.

Ishmael Adams and Eric Kendricks returned interceptions for touchdowns and Randall Goforth scored on a fumble return for UCLA (1-0). Hundley passed for 242 yards and Jordan Payton caught eight passes for 98 yards.

Backup quarterback Matt Johns was 13-of-22 for 154 yards and two touchdown passes for Virginia (0-1). Starter Greyson Lambert was 16-of-23 for 112 yards and two interceptions before being pulled late in the second quarter.

Adams scored on a 20-yard return early in the second quarter when he collected the ball after Owamagbe Odighizuwa deflected the throw by Lambert. Virginia got on the board a short time later on Ian Frye’s 35-yard field goal before Goforth took a fumble 75 yards for a score with 2:55 left in the half and Kendricks returned an interception 37 yards with 1:20 to play as the Bruins took a 21-3 lead.

Johns tossed a 29-yard scoring pass to Andre Levrone shortly before halftime and later connected with Darius Jennings on a 23-yard aerial midway through the third quarter. Hundley scored on a 6-yard rush with 1:02 left in the stanza to give UCLA a 28-17 lead before Frye booted a 27-yard field goal with 6:47 left in the game.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cavaliers coach Mike London lost a season-opening contest for the first time in five seasons at the school. … Hundley passed Cory Paus (6,877 from 1999-2002) for third-place on UCLA’s career passing-yardage list and finished the contest with 7,053. … Jennings caught three passes to move into 12th place in Virginia history with 109 career receptions, five behind the two players who share 10th place – former NFL standout Herman Moore (1988-90) and Wali Lundy (2002-05).
