Austyn Carta-Samuels went 12-of-22 for 147 yards with a touchdown and a costly interception after Vanderbilt (1-2, 0-2 SEC) cut the deficit to 10. Jordan Matthews had eight catches for 106 yards and Wesley Tate added 71 yards rushing.

The Gamecocks scored on their first four possessions, getting two passing touchdowns from Shaw and running scores from Davis and backup quarterback Dylan Thompson. Vanderbilt's Steven Clarke returned an interception 69 yards to set up Jerron Seymour's 1-yard touchdown with 3:38 left in the second quarter and Carey Spear added a career-long 54 yard field goal to get the Commodores within 28-10.

South Carolina pushed the lead to 35-10 on Brandon Wilds' 33-yard touchdown but Vanderbilt got back in the game when Carta-Samuels had a scoring run and pass separated by 13 seconds in the fourth quarter thanks to a South Carolina fumbled kickoff. The Commodores then recovered a punt that touched a Gamecock player, but Jimmy Legree's interception at the goal line ended Vanderbilt's threat.
