Minnesota 44, New Mexico State 21: Rodrick Williams and Philip Nelson combined for 270 yards and two touchdowns as the Gophers relied on their dominant rushing attack in a road win over the Aggies.

Williams totaled 148 yards on 16 rushes, while Nelson made up for a disappointing performance with his arm by rushing for 122 yards on 15 carries. Each added a touchdown on the ground, as did David Cobb (nine carries, 56 yards).

New Mexico's running attack did not fare nearly as well, totaling only 103 yards on 41 attempts. The Aggies (0-2) did record three rushing touchdowns, including two by Germi Morrison.

Cobb's 14-yard touchdown run gave Minnesota (2-0) a 13-0 lead midway through the second quarter. New Mexico State answered with a score, but the Gophers responded in impressive fashion with two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the half.

Williams scored his first touchdown of the season to make it 20-7 with 2:38 remaining in the second quarter. Then Marcus Jones' 65-yard punt return for a touchdown with 1:22 left in the period created a deficit from which the Aggies could not recover.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Nelson completed only 8-of-15 passes for 127 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. His counterpart, Andrew McDonald, was 22-of-31 for 186 yards with no TDs or INTs. ... Williams had only four carries for 13 yards last weekend against UNLV. ... Minnesota K Chris Hawthorne made all three of his field-goal attempts - from 45, 22 and 27 yards out.
