No. 15 Texas 45, New Mexico 0: Sophomore David Ash continued his efficient play, throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns as 15th-ranked Texas handed the visiting Lobos their fourth shutout loss in less than a year.

Ash completed 16 of 22 passes while the Longhorns’ stout defense yielded just 241 total yards – including a mere 35 yards passing – to a New Mexico team trying to turn its program around after three consecutive 1-11 seasons.

Texas (2-0) has yet to surrender a single point to the Lobos (1-1) in three all-time meetings.

A 56.9 percent passer as a freshman last season, Ash has completed 73.4 percent of his passes this season and has yet to throw an interception after throwing twice as many interceptions (eight) as touchdowns (four) in 2011.

Although he did most of his damage with his arm in this contest, Ash started the rout with a 49-yard touchdown run up the middle of the New Mexico defense on the Longhorns’ first possession.

Ash added his first touchdown pass with 28 seconds remaining in the first half to Mike Davis and ended the first drive of the second half with a 45-yard scoring strike to Daje Johnson to stake Texas to a 24-0 advantage.

Joe Bergeron and D.J. Monroe contributed short rushing touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter, respectively, before backup quarterback Case McCoy threw for a late score to complete the scoring.

The Longhorns scored on five of their first six drives, with the only Lobos’ stop coming on a 45-yard missed field goal opportunity late in the second quarter.

Kasey Carrier rushed for a game-high 51 yards for New Mexico, which managed just 89 yards in the second half.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas won 47-0 in each of the first two meetings between the schools in 1948 and 1988. … New Mexico coach Bob Davie fell to 10-2 against Texas in 12 games against the Longhorns as an assistant and head coach. … The Longhorns have pitched shutouts in each of the last two seasons after having not done so since 2005, the year they won their last national championship.
