BYU struggled to get much going in the first half, but got a big break when Tulsa’s J.D. Ratcliff fumbled a punt with 17 seconds left in the second quarter. Nelson scrambled and found Hoffman for a 17-yard touchdown pass on the next play as the Cougars closed to within 14-10 at halftime.

Junior Dexter McCoil had two interceptions for Tulsa and had another nullified by an offside penalty.
