Matthew McGloin’s 74-yard touchdown pass to Derek Moye helped Penn State escape the upset bid of host Indiana in an ugly 16-10 triumph Saturday.

Penn State (4-1, 1-0 Big Ten) improved to 15-0 all-time against the Hoosiers (1-4, 0-1) as the teams played the first of five Leaders Division games in the new-look Big Ten.

McGloin tossed three touchdown passes in last week’s 34-6 victory over Eastern Michigan, but he and starter Rob Bolden had an ineffective day in Joe Paterno’s platoon system. Minus the long scoring play that gave Penn State a 13-3 third-quarter advantage, the quarterbacks went a combined 15-for-36 for 197 yards.

An interception of Bolden on Penn State’s first possession led to a Hoosiers field goal that stood as the only points for much of the first half.

The Nittany Lions tied it on Anthony Fera’s 22-yard field goal, but failed to capitalize on two other scoring chances and went into halftime knotted 3-3. Fera converted kicks of 27 and 33 yards in the second half, the latter giving Penn State a 16-3 lead with 10:10 to play.

First-year coach Kevin Wilson gave sophomore quarterback Dusty Kiel his first start for the struggling Hoosiers, in place of Ed Wright-Baker. Kiel went 22-for-45 for 189 yards and a touchdown. His 5-yard pass to Ted Bolser capped a 14-play, 77-yard drive that pulled Indiana within six in the closing minutes.

Moye had 158 yards on six catches, while Silas Redd added 126 yards on 30 rushes for the Nittany Lions.
