Darius Reynolds had 128 receiving yards and two touchdowns to lead Iowa State to a 24-20 victory over host Connecticut on Friday and its first 3-0 start since 2005.
Reynolds scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown when he caught an in-route and hurdled two UConn defenders for a 20-yard score to put the Cyclones up 24-20 with 9:08 left.
Iowa State quarterback Steele Jantz overcame three first-quarter interceptions. Three of Jantz’s first four passing attempts landed in the hands of Connecticut defenders, but the junior college transfer came back to lead his third fourth-quarter comeback in as many tries.
Jantz finished 18-of-29 for 200 yards and a touchdown.
Connecticut jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but it could have been more. The Huskies failed to sustain many drives, and kicker Dave Teggart missed field goals of 41 and 43 yards.
Reynolds' first touchdown catch - a 40-yarder from wide receiver Josh Lenz - gave Iowa State a 14-10 lead early in the third quarter.
The loss snapped a 10-game home winning streak for Connecticut, which is 3-2 all-time against the Big 12.
Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads improved 13-1 when holding opponents to less than 24 points as the Cyclones won for only the third time in their last nine road openers.
