Silas Redd rushed for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Penn State to a 41-7 victory over Indiana State on Saturday at Beaver Stadium.

Chaz Powell set the tone for the Nittany Lions, returning the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. From there, Penn State racked up 174 first-half rushing yards while taking a 28-0 lead into the half.

Indiana State, coming off its first winning season since 1996, mustered only two first downs and 66 yards in the first half.

Rob Bolden got the start for Penn State at quarterback, putting an end to months of uncertainty as head coach Joe Paterno tried to choose between Bolden and Matt McGloin.

Paterno coached from the press box and won his 402nd game.

Bolden played the first quarter and completed 2-of-5 passes for 9 yards before McGloin came on in the second. Both quarterbacks played in the second half and finished a combined 12-of-20 for 114 yards passing.

Indiana State’s score didn’t come until the fourth quarter, when quarterback Ronnie Fouch completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Justin Hilton.

Penn State outgained Indiana State 359-170 and scored five rushing touchdowns, with four coming from different running backs.

The Nittany Lions will host No. 2 Alabama on Sept. 10.
