Isi Sofele and Marvin Jones scored two touchdowns apiece and Zach Maynard rebounded from a rough start as California defeated Fresno State, 36-21, Saturday in San Francisco.

Maynard’s first pass of the season was intercepted by Fresno State and turned into a Robbie Rouse 9-yard touchdown run, but he settled down to complete 16-of-35 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns.

California led 19-14 at halftime and extended its lead with two third-quarter touchdowns.

Jones and Keenan Allen became the first pair of California receivers to go over 100 yards since 2006, and the Golden Bears won for the first time in three games against the Bulldogs.

Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr appeared out of sync in his first career start and finished 21-of-33 for 142 yards. The Bulldogs were 2-of-14 on third-down conversions.

California’s defense, which led the Pac-10 (now Pac-12) last season, held Fresno State to 213 total yards and recorded five sacks.

Fresno State blocked two extra points, but the Bulldogs’ defense looked overmatched at times. Sofele rushed 24 times for 83 yards, and Maynard added another 53 yards on the ground.

The neutral-site game was played at Candlestick Park because California’s Memorial Stadium is being renovated this season. Approximately 15,000 Fresno State fans traveled from the Central Valley for the game.
